If I Stay

If I Stay is an amazing book by Gayle Forman and she sure knows how to make you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster. It makes you grateful for what you have in life and to never take anything for granted because everything can be taken away from you in a moment. One moment is all it takes and your life can be changed instantly. I loved the book and cannot wait to see the movie which comes out this month.

Imagine if all of your choices were gone. Except one. And it's the only one that really matters. Mia is faced with the hardest decision she will ever make, once her life is irrevocably changed in an instant one February morning when Mia goes for a drive with her family. If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the choices we all make.

Gayle Forman had me on the edge of my seat wondering what Mia's choice would be, to live or die. Gayle also shows that family is not just necessarily those who you have blood ties to and that you are never truly alone. My heart also broke for Adam (Mia's boyfriend), he loved her so much and was willing to let her go if she decided to live. I like the fact that one of the nurses said that Mia is running the show, whether she lives or dies it's all up to her. Our decisions are our own and Mia had a tough one to make, knowing that if she lived it wouldn't be easy. There were flashbacks of Mia's life throughout the book, it was narrated through the present and past. It was hard seeing how good her life was before the accident which made you realise how awful of a decision she had.

“If you stay, I'll do whatever you want. I'll quit the band, go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I'll do that, too. I was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you go. If you stay.”   -Adam

One of the most heart-breaking parts of the book was Mia's grandfathers speech to Mia and I was completely bawling my eyes out. It was also in that moment that Mia releases that she has also lost Teddy and even know Gramps doesn't want to lose his granddaughter, he realises that coming back may be too hard and painful for her.

“It's okay,' he tells me. 'If you want to go. Everyone wants you to stay. I want you to stay more than I've ever wanted anything in my life.' His voice cracks with emotion. He stops, clears his throat, takes a breath, and continues. 'But that's what I want and I could see why it might not be what you want. So I just wanted to tell you that I understand if you go. It's okay if you have to leave us. It's okay if you want to stop fighting.'

My all time favourite quote is from If I Stay and is so true. "Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you." Some choices define use and make us who we are. Different events throughout life changes us and the bad ones make us stronger, whilst the good ones remind us of happier times when tragedy strikes.

Here are more of my other favourite quotes from the book:

“Love, it never dies. It never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it. Love can make you immortal”

“I have a feeling that once you live through something like this, you become a little bit invincible.”

“People believe what they want to believe.”

“Don't be scared...Women can handle the worst kind of pain. You'll find out one day.”
